Hi there, my name is Melissa Peterson and I LOVE to be outside in the garden and to create things! From an early age I was always doing something outdoors or doing something creative—playing, planting, picking flowers, painting, doodling, gluing, sculpting, you name it! I have always felt such deep satisfaction and happiness when I am outside surrounded by natures beauty or using my hands to make something.
I manage my family’s garden center, Ted Lare Garden Center and absolutely love my job. The best of many worlds are combined with my job: teaching classes, helping customers, growing a business, creating beautiful items for sale, growing plants, being part of a business my dad started and being outdoors in a beautiful environment. I feel very lucky and blessed to work where I do. In my free time my husband Tim and I are busy building the gardens of our dreams on the small acreage that we recently purchased near Indianola, Iowa. Our plantings currently include a vegetable garden, perennial gardens, and fruit trees. Our hopes are to continue to add more plants and areas to our gardens each year.
During the winter months (when gardening is pretty non-existent here in Iowa ) I spend a lot of my time in my craft room. I was inspired by a young age by my mom (an art teacher), my dad (the landscape architect and great at perspective drawings) my great grandma (a free spirited artist at heart who y’all would have loved) and my grandpa (an watercolor artist) to spend time painting, drawing, doodling and whatever creative endeavor took my fancy. I still live for these moments of creativity and know I am happiest when I make time for my art.
I also live for my mommy time with our two daughters, Brooke 1.5 years old and 15 year old Emma. I love the differences in ages and live for the special moments with each daughter that make my heart soar with happiness and joy.
The last several years I’ve been inspired in new many ways. I find everyday inspiration as I wander through the garden center at work and marvel at a flower bloom, the unique foliage of a tropical plant or the sunlight on my face. I’ve been spending my creative time doodling, making mosaic pieces, fused glass art in my kiln, and more recently some art journaling. My daughters have taught me to appreciate all the little things in life and to live for those small moments of joy. I hope you’ll check back frequently as I get my blog started and we’ll see where this next creative adventure takes me. Thanks for stopping by!
